Lee Jung-Suk
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the awareness on the function of the elderly group home and to suggest the direction for establishing the function that fits it original characteristics as a group home. For this purpose, a FGI was conducted on 25 heads of elderly group home, elderly care facilities, and home care agencies. The results are as follows. First, the function of the elderly group home were shown as the homelike setting, individualized care provision, and living community. Second, the heads of the facilities recognized that the elderly group home did not function properly in Korea. The reasons were derived from four factors: mitigation entry barriers, lack of understanding of essential functions, healthcare-focused services, and disconnection from the community. Third, the future direction of the establishment of functions includes the selection of the elderly capable of daily lives, the programs that reflect individuality, and community-based care. This study suggests consideration for those eligible for elderly group home, strengthening care management to cope with individual needs of elderly residents, and establishing community based group home.
